A massive search operation is underway for Jason Coughran, a 60-year-old experienced hiker who disappeared while trekking through the rugged Desolation Wilderness near Lake Tahoe on May 25.
According to search officials, Coughran was last seen near Angora Peak at approximately 11 a.m. before all communication and contact abruptly ceased. Since then, an extensive multi-agency search effort has been launched across the vast wilderness area as family members, friends, and rescuers continue to hope for answers.
Nearly 200 search and rescue personnel have been deployed in the effort to locate Coughran. Ground crews, specialized search teams, and aviation resources have been working tirelessly to cover the challenging terrain that stretches across approximately 63,960 acres of alpine wilderness, dense forest, rocky ridgelines, and remote backcountry areas.
The search has also received support from the Air National Guard, which deployed a Chinook helicopter to assist with aerial operations and transportation of personnel into difficult-to-access locations. Despite the scale of the response and days of searching, authorities have not reported finding any confirmed trace of the missing hiker.
The disappearance has generated growing concern throughout the region, particularly given the area’s rugged conditions and history of difficult search operations. Desolation Wilderness is known for its steep terrain, dense vegetation, and rapidly changing weather, all of which can complicate rescue efforts and make locating missing individuals extremely challenging.
Family members and search teams remain hopeful that new information may emerge as the operation continues. Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have encountered Coughran on May 25 or who has information regarding his whereabouts to contact investigators immediately.
For now, the mystery surrounding Jason Coughran’s disappearance remains unsolved as rescuers continue their relentless search through one of California’s most remote and demanding wilderness regions.
